The narration follows the author, on his personal odyssey, from the world of chemical cures to Lake Atitlan, a place where people are healed through traditional Mayan means, exploiting the use of natural medicines within the context of traditional beliefs. He includes a detailed treatment of medicinal plants and how to prepare the herbs for various remedies.
Lake Atitlan, in the Guatemalan Highlands of Central America. It is a magical place; a volcanic caldera that forms the deepest lake in Central America. The Lake's basin is home to the Tz'utujil and Kaqchickel Maya, traditional peoples who consider themselves la gente natural (the natural people) . The Mayan view, or "cosmovision", is faith-oriented and rooted in oral history that presents reality in terms of parallel natural and spiritual worlds, where spirits influence outcomes of events occurring in the natural world populated by living man.
