A principios del siglo XVI, los restos de un navío español y algunos de sus tripulantes arribaron a la costa de Yucatán, donde fueron capturados por sus pobladores, que pertenecían a la cultura maya. Dos sobrevivientes de ese naufragio, Jerónimo de Aguilar y Gonzalo Guerrero, desempeñaron un papel fundamental en la ambiciosa empresa de conquista emprendida por la Corona española, uno como aliado de los europeos y el otro combatiendo al lado del pueblo maya. Esta obra presenta algunos de los aspectos más relevantes de la vida de ambos personajes y describe las características principales de la civilización maya.
