En los conquistadores conquistados Florine Asseelbergs presenta desde una nueva perspectiva el papel que desempeñaron los conquistadores nahuas en la conquista española de Mesoamérica en el siglo XVI. Durante la primera década después de la llegada de los españoles, cuando el pleno efecto de la invasión aún no se había previsto, los ejércitos nahuas y otros ejércitos indígenas emprendieron numerosas batallas al lado de los españoles. Los indígenas también les sirvieron de guías, traductores y asesores de guerra. Sin embargo después del período de la conquista los españoles marginaron el papel de los indígenas a tal punto que su contribución muy pocas veces fue tomada en cuenta en los registros escritos de la historia.
