“En el vertedero” es una de las obras más personales, sorprendentes y controvertidas de Maurice Sendak, que reinterpreta dos canciones tradicionales de Mother Goose, autora imaginaria de una colección de rimas infantiles. Los protagonistas, Juan y Pedro, rescatan a un bebé que había sido capturado por unas ratas. Frente a otros títulos enfocados al mundo interior de la infancia, aquí se plasma una óptica externa del mundo infantil, sobre la obligación ética de velar por su protección. Los libros de sus últimos años, como este de 1993, abordan temas complejos y sombríos; los miedos del autor.
