Varvara, una hembra de ballena gris, viaja por el océano Pacífico desde Rusia hasta la península de Baja California en México. Este trayecto, de ida y vuelta a lo largo de decenas de miles de kilómetros, es el viaje más largo, del que se tiene constancia, realizado por un mamífero (22.511 km en 172 días).
En este periplo, Varvara conocerá el maravilloso mundo submarino, mientras crece y se transforma en un cetáceo adulto. Vivirá aventuras y se enfrentará a grandes peligros. Descubrirá a los humanos en sus distintas facetas. Aprenderá a cantar y a cuidar. Tras perder a su madre, descubrirá la amistad y el amor.
Esta historia está inspirada en un hecho real. La ruta migratoria de esta hembra de ballena gris (Eschrichtius robustus) también planteó interrogantes sobre la protección de la especie.
