John Nitsch es un corresponsal estadounidense que llega a Chile en 1970 para cubrir las elecciones que harán presidente a Salvador Allende. Pronto conoce a Claudia y José, militantes de la Unidad Popular, y junto a ellos será testigo del curso de los acontecimientos en Chile hasta que el brutal golpe de 1973 lo trunque todo. Los autores se sirven de la mirada extraña de un tercero para hacer un retrato objetivo y preciso tanto de los poderosos enemigos a los que se enfrentó la vía chilena al socialismo como de quienes consideraban, desde un apoyo crítico, que el gobierno de la Unidad Popular debía avanzar más rápido e ir más lejos.
