Un cometa se dirige hacia la Tierra... ¡y nadie en el valle de los Mumin sabe qué hacer! ¿Se romperá el planeta en mil pedazos?

Los Mumin viven una vida tranquila y apacible en el valle hasta que un día todos los colores desaparecen. Los árboles, las flores? incluso el puente multicolor que acaba de construir Papá Mumin se han vuelto grises.

Mumin decide investigar lo sucedido y, junto con su amigo Sniff, se embarca río abajo en busca de un misterioso observatorio para averiguar si realmente el valle está amenazado por un cataclismo. Durante su viaje se toparán con peligrosas criaturas, como un enorme saurio, un cóndor y un arbusto feroz, y harán nuevos amigos que se unirán a su expedición.

El grupo, muy variopinto, tendrá que aunar todo su ingenio para ponerse a salvo del temible cometa que se acerca al Valle de los Mumin.
