Esa minúscula taberna no tiene nombre, su dueño tampoco. Sin embargo, en el barrio de Shinjuku, todo el mundo los conoce. Si en 'El gourmet solitario', de Taniguchi y Kusumi, la comida se disfruta en solitario y en silencio, en el manga de Abe sirve para romper el hielo, para desatar el diálogo entre los urbanitas acostumbrados a callarse y a mirarse los zapatos. Entre salsa de soja y algas secas nacen anécdotas, risas y confidencias.

'La cantina de medianoche' es un éxito en Japón, donde se han producido dos películas basadas en el manga, que también tiene serie televisiva en Netflix, con el título 'Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories'.

Además, el segundo tomo de 'La cantina de medianoche' formó parte de los ?esenciales? del Festival Internacional de Cómic de Angoulême de 2019.
