Hay muchos libros infantiles, pero pocos, muy pocos, que después de más de 60 años de su primera publicación, sigan atrayendo y conmoviendo. Uno de estos es Ferdinando el toro. El texto de Munro Leaf fue publicado en plena guerra civil española, como una bella aportación a la causa de la paz. Las ilustraciones de esta edición son muy posteriores: su autor, Werner Klemke, recibió por ellas el Premio Manzana de Oro de la Bienal de Bratislava. Pasaron los años y Ferdinando el toro, que prefería oler las flores, sentado debajo de una encina, en lugar de competir con los otros toros en fiereza, mantiene no sólo la calidad de una gran belleza plástica y poética, sino que vuelve, una y otra vez, y, lamentablemente, a ser actualidad.
