El universo de los cómics ha generado en poco más de un siglo una espectacular constelación de fantasías y mitos, que unas veces procedían de la tradición artística multisecular, pero en otras se forjaron como invenciones específicas para el nuevo medio. Así se codearon, desde sus primeras décadas, los seres fabulosos de la arcaica tradición grecolatina con los héroes lanzados a viajes espaciales, los centauros con los primeros astronautas, las walkyrias con los científicos perversos que aspiraban a destruir la civilización, por no mencionar el temprano despliegue de barrocas fantasías oníricas. Coetáneos del cine, los cómics gozaron de la ventaja de no estar sujetos a los imperativos del naturalismo fotográfico, que sólo podía eludirse con laboriosos trucajes. De este modo forjaron sus estirpes visionarias que hoy nos siguen deslumbrando.
