La profundidad psicológica con la que Fiódor Dostoievski revestía a sus personajes lo convierte, a ojos de algunos, en un escritor existencialista. En efecto, muchas de las grandes preguntas sobre la existencia humana que años después se plantearía este movimiento filosófico habían sido ya tratadas en profundidad en las obras del autor ruso. Crimen y castigo no es una excepción a este respecto, ya que gracias a su incansable torrente de palabras el lector se convierte en un testigo de excepción de las complejas contradicciones que alberga el alma humana. «Un verdadero amo, a quien todo se le permite, cañonea Tolón, hace una carnicería en París, olvida un ejército en Egipto, gasta medio millón de hombres en la campaña sobre Moscú y sale bien librado de Vilna gracias a una ocurrencia. Y aun así, a su muerte le erigen estatuas y, por lo tanto, todo se le permite. ¡No, esa gente no está hecha de carne, sino de bronce! »
