En 1845, el francés Prosper Merimée escribió esta novela romántica en la que se retrata su visión de la España de la época, costumbrista y exótica, y se relatan los amores trágicos y pasionales de una cigarrera gitana, un bandolero y un torero. La fama de Carmen, su protagonista femenina, se haría universal gracias a la ópera de George Bizet, y se convertiría en todo un mito de la mujer fatal, libre y seductora, capaz de arrastrar a la perdición a quienes la rodean.
