ALFOMBRAS DE ASERRIN

La familia Lau viaja a Antigua, Guatemala para visitar a sus primos. Aunque los Laus son chinos y budistas, adoran el boato de Pascua, y la Pascua en Antigua es emocionante, con largas y elaboradas procesiones de penitentes envueltos en incienso y llevando estatuas coloniales españolas por las calles adoquinadas de la ciudad. La mejor parte es ver las elaboradas alfombras hechas de aserrín de colores, que las procesiones caminan y destruyen. En la mañana de la procesión más importante, la heroína es invitada a hacer su propia alfombra de aserrín. Pero, ¿por qué, se pregunta, hacer algo tan hermoso, solo para que se arruine? Las celebraciones religiosas guatemaltecas y chinas, las carreras de botes de dragones y las procesiones de Semana Santa, las piñatas, los bautizos y los tamales chinos entran y salen de esta historia, que celebra la belleza, la celebración religiosa y la tolerancia.


The Lau family travels to Antigua, Guatemala to visit their cousins. Although the Laus are Chinese and Buddhist, they adore the pageantry of Easter, and Easter in Antigua is exciting, with long, elaborate processions of penitents wreathed in incense and carrying colonial Spanish statues down the cobblestone streets of the city. The best part is seeing the elaborate carpets made of colored sawdust, which the processions walk over and destroy. On the morning of the most important procession, the heroine is invited to make her very own sawdust carpet. But why, she wonders, make something so beautiful, only to have it be ruined? Guatemalan and Chinese religious observances, dragon boat races and Easter processions, piñatas, baptisms, and Chinese tamales all weave in and out of this story, which celebrates beauty, religious celebration, and tolerance.
