BIG NATE: SAY GOOD-BYE TO DORK CITY
PEIRCE, LINCOLN
Sixth-grader Nate Wright is back in another humorous installment from the Big Nate comic series. Nate cannot stay out of trouble, whether he is dealing with a substitute teacher, school picture day, or playing alongside his friends in their rock band, Enslave the Mollusk. An especially major disaster strikes when Nates lucky socks go missing and he must play in a basketball game without them. Recurring characters make appearances throughout, such as Nates father, friends Francis and Teddy, and various teachers, including Mrs. Godfrey. Each scenario is relatively short, allowing for plenty of fun punchlines and never a dull moment for readers. The title of this book is uttered by a school bully, Marcus, in a storyline that will be familiar to any student who has ever faced bullying or peer pressure. Marcus seems to be a cool kid at first, and Nate desperately wants to hang out with him. When Nate is finally allowed to join Marcus posse, he finds himself quickly in over his head as he is forced to give up his old friendships and tone down his excitable personality. Although this plotline still involves the usual level of comedy, there is also a useful lesson to be learned from the situation. In the end, Nate realizes who his real friends are. With bright, goofy illustrations as always, this collection of comics is sure to satisfy Big Nate fans and anyone looking for a lighthearted read.
